Ideas for continuing a conversation after a short greeting on Tinder.
What to Say in Response to “Hey” on Tinder
Respond to the greeting, add a real detail, and ask a question that does not take too much effort to answer. If their profile mentions a hobby, use it as a starting point. If there are no details, “Hey! How is your week going?” also lets you start without inventing a connection. You do not need to be especially funny or write a long paragraph.
A “hey” on its own does not tell you whether the other person is very interested, in a hurry, or simply unsure how to start. Avoid reading intentions into the message that it does not show. Your next reply can open a topic; how both of you participate will tell you more than that first greeting.
Choose Your Reply Based on Context
If this is your first exchange and you see an interest on their profile, choose one that makes you curious too. “I saw that you like cooking. What dish do you make best?” invites them to share something specific. Do not claim to share that interest if it is not true: asking with curiosity is enough.
If you have already talked, return to a detail from your last exchange. “Hey! How did that presentation you had today go?” is appropriate if that presentation was mentioned. Do not attribute memories to a conversation you never had or use information about someone else.
If the profile is almost empty, use an everyday question and share your own answer afterward. Asking about a relaxing plan or a recommendation can work. Avoid intimate questions, questions about their exact location, or questions that make them justify why they are on the app.
How to Continue Without Turning It Into an Interview
After the first reply, acknowledge what they tell you and add something of your own. If they say they enjoy walking, you could mention a walk you enjoyed and ask what kind of route they prefer. Alternate questions with contributions: asking five questions in a row without sharing anything can feel like a questionnaire.
Ask one question per message when that is enough. “What are you reading, where do you live, what are you looking for, and what do you do?” opens too many topics at once. A smaller invitation gives the other person room to choose how much to share.
If They Reply With One Word Again
You can try another topic once if you want to continue, but you do not have to carry the entire conversation. No line can guarantee a reply. If there is no reciprocity or someone expresses disinterest, give them space and respect that boundary.
Avoid messages such as “Are your replies always this short?” or “You took too long.” They turn a new conversation into a demand. There is also no need to send several messages in a row to get an explanation. You can end kindly or simply stop pressing.
How to Use a Screenshot to Ask for Ideas
In the reply generator, upload a screenshot that shows the greeting and enough of the previous conversation to understand it. If useful context is outside the image, add a second screenshot. Share only material you have the right to send and avoid unnecessary personal information.
Choose a tone and leave language detection on automatic if you want to follow the language of the chat. Choose English as the output language, or select another supported language. Check names, details, and tone before copying. If a suggestion mentions something that does not appear in the screenshot, discard or correct it.
The following examples are fictional and show possible continuations, not observed results or promises of a reply. If a conversation has not started yet, the first-message guide helps you begin with the profile.
